Game of Thrones may have ended months ago, but fans are still discussing the divisive final season. Between Daenerys' Mad Queen pivot and Cersei's lackluster plot line, there's no denying a lot of people were let down by the show's conclusion. Now, though, Kit Harrington is speaking out about Jon Snow's equally controversial fate. According to the actor, Jon's banishment to the Night's Watch and future beyond the wall is the perfect ending for Jon.
While chatting with the Hollywood Reporter, Kit revealed he was actually thrilled with Jon's ending. “Seeing him go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with—the Free Folk—it felt to me like he was finally free," the actor explained.
Though Kit's behind-the-scenes reaction to Jon (spoiler alert) killing Daenerys in the final episode went viral, it seems like Kit has made peace with it over the past few months. “Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, it felt like he was set free,” Kit said of Jon's life with the Free Folk. “It was a really sweet ending. As much as he had done a horrible thing [in killing Daenerys], as much as he had felt that pain, the actual ending for him was finally being released.”
While Kit has a more chill reaction to his character's fate, Emilia Clarke struggled after finding out Daenerys would die by Jon's hand in the very last episode of the show. Though her first reaction was to cry it out, ultimately, she had to make peace with Daenerys' downfall, too. "I tried to think what the ending will be. It’s not like she’s suddenly going to go, ‘Okay, I’m gonna put a kettle on and put cookies in the oven and we’ll just sit down and have a lovely time and pop a few kids out.’ That was never going to happen. She’s a Targaryen," Emilia told Entertainment Weekly.
“I thought she was going to die,” she continued. “I feel very taken care of as a character in that scene. It’s a very beautiful and touching ending. Hopefully, what you’ll see in that last moment as she’s dying is: There’s the vulnerability — there’s the little girl you met in season 1. See? She’s right there. And now, she’s not there anymore…”
Despite all of her complicated feelings about how things ended for Daenerys on Game of Thrones, Emilia will always "stand by Daenerys. I stand by her! I can’t not.”
