Wheeling Family Spearheads Summer Swim Pass Program for Kids

WHEELING, W.VA. – In memory of their parents, the Calissie family is once again spearheading a Summer Swim Pass program that will provide pool passes for children who could not otherwise afford them.

With support from the community and Wheeling’s Department of Parks & Recreation, Chip Calissie said his family hopes to provide passes to 100 kids in need. At last count, funding for more than 60 pool passes had been donated.

“Our parents, who enjoyed their summers at 36th Street pool, always made sure anyone without money would not be turned away, so we wish to continue that,” he said. “If you have any fond memories at one of the city pools, I encourage to you buy a pass for a kid so they might have similar memories on which to reflect.I have no doubt that we will be able to provide 100-plus passes to kids and help them enjoy a safe and fun summer in our city pools!”

Director of Parks & Recreation Rochelle Barry said she is excited the Calissie family is once again leading this initiative.

“The kids in the community have had to adjust to not seeing their friends as much this past year so we are looking forward to providing them the opportunity to re-engage and make some great memories at the pool," she said.

Those wishing to make a contribution to the Summer Swim Pass program can do so by sending a check to Wheeling’s Parks & Recreation Department at 2150 Chapline St., Suite 133, Wheeling, W.Va. 26003.
