The staff and chef at an exclusive Dallas sushi restaurant learn sign language to accommodate a Deaf couple. On November 22nd, the online dining editor for “D Magazine,” Nataly Keomoungkhounposted on social media detailing the touching story of exceptional service her sister Melissa Keomoungkhoun and her husband Victor Montiel received at the sushi restaurant Tatsu Dallas.

In the post, Nataly writes that after telling her sister about dining at Tatsu and how much she loved it, Melissa was able to score a tough-to-get reservation at the popular authentic sushi restaurant. Melissa and her husband are Deaf and had some concerns about communicating with staff at Tatsu, so she emailed them to make them aware. So the restaurant sent a copy of the menu ahead of their reservation, allowing Melissa and her husband to get an idea of what to expect, which Nataly says made the couple happy.

However, when they arrived at the restaurant for their reservation, Melissa and Victor were blown away by the reception. The restaurant’s chef-owner, his wife, and the beverage director all greeted the couple using American Sign Language (ASL) that they had been practicing since receiving their email. “Chef Tatsuya Sekiguchi also learned how to sign the entire tasting menu,” Nataly writes. She says that her sister was moved to tears by the thoughtful gesture. The “Today” show later emailed Sekiguchi about the moment and he said that he always tries to provide the best service possible, saying, “Everyday and Everyone is special.” He also hopes the couple will return and plans to continue learning ASL until then.
