During a recent thunderstorm, a rescue dog named Shanny escaped from her owner’s home in Dampier, Western Australia. A few days later, the dusty pup turned up inside a bin used to hold iron ore at the nearby Rio Tinto port facility to the amazement of workers at the site.

Rio Tinto's emergency response team member Travis Burrows was shocked to learn that the pup was found alive inside the bin. Over the course of the two days she is believed to have been stuck inside the bin, nearly 600 truckloads of iron ore were dumped into it. Each truck can carry over 100 tons of ore, so that means that Shanny managed to avoid being crushed while more than 100-thousand tons of iron ore were dropped on her over the two days. "That was a miracle, to be honest, that the dog was still alive," Burrows says.

Shanny's owner Eloise Dortch was grateful to get her pup back and was amazed she only suffered a few scratches. "She is totally back to her normal self, being a bit bossy and telling us when we should take her for a walk," Dortch says. After getting some much-needed water, Shanny shared some of the evidence of her experience with Dortch. "She gave one little shake and I learnt how much iron ore dust you can get on your kitchen floor," she recalls. Workers at the Rio Tinto facility were very interested in the fate of Shanny, and Dortch plans on taking her back there soon for a visit.
