The Professor's Fun Fact 11/12/18

Illuminated Tires

Goodyear briefly introduced tires that did this in 1961.

Glowed in the dark

Goodyear out of Akron, Ohio, was always looking for interesting products to keep them ahead of the curve. The company’s research department discovered a way to make synthetic rubber tires called Neothane. It was a good deal; it was cheaper than regular tires and had the odd effect of being clear when it was done cooking in the oven.

Developers at Goodyear thought it would be interesting to dye the rubber all sorts of interesting colors and put lights in it. It was interesting; a group of lights was mounted along the rim of the wheel and made the tires glow in all sorts of bright colors. Reports of tests at the time found people running red lights, running off the road, or just plain stopping in traffic to watch the cars go by.

Unfortunately, not only did the tires get too dirty from driving to work very long, the fake rubber was melting under normal breaking. Not surprisingly, Goodyear did away with glowing tires before they made it to market.
