Now that schools are back in for the year and the peak summer travel season is behind us, those looking for a budget-friendly weekend trip are in luck. Fall is the time of year when the crowds are smaller and so is the cost of getaways. According to Kayak’s data, average flight and hotel prices drop 11% during the fall shoulder season compared to peak summer.

So, where are the best places to visit this time of year that won’t cost a fortune? The travel site has crunched the numbers to find out.

  • Kayak’s team analyzed their data to find the U.S. destinations where round-trip airfare and a one-night hotel stay combined average less than $500. The list is based on searches for travel between September 15th and November 15th.
  • Southern cities and beach destinations offer the best bang for your buck during fall, and there are a few spots the leaf peepers will love, too.
