For students from households that earn less than $100-thousand a year, attending Princeton University is now free. The New Jersey Ivy League school has announced that they’ve raised the amount a family can make to qualify for a full scholarship. Previously, families that earned less than $65-thousand could receive a full-scholarship to the school, but now that’s been raised to $100-thousand meaning that more than a quarter of the university’s undergraduates will now get their tuition, room and board for free.
Princeton president Christopher L Eisgruber says the move is in keeping with the university’s commitment to ensuring that talented students of all backgrounds can get an education there. "These improvements to our aid packages, made possible by the sustained generosity of our alumni and friends, will enhance the experiences of students during their time at Princeton and their choices and impact after they graduate," the school president said in a press release.
A year of tuition at Princeton costs nearly $80-thousand, according to the school’s website. The new changes also eliminated the portion of tuition that students were required to pay for personally from savings or an on-campus job. Additionally, the school increased financial aid for books and personal expenses. Students beginning in the fall of 2023 will be the first to get the new financial aid structure, which also offers benefits to families earning up to $150-thousand.
