FL Firefighters Save Eagle Impaled By Lightning Rod

Firefighters in North Florida rescue an eagle impaled on a lightning rod atop a 120-foot tower. Last Thursday, the MacClenny Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) received “an interesting call.” A bald eagle had been speared by a lightning rod at the top of a radio tower and was in need of rescuing.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in a ladder truck with a 100-foot ladder. After cutting a fence to get access to the area, engineer Louis Castle and Lieutenant Garret Williams went to the top of the ladder and then Castle scaled the remaining 20 feet up the side of the tower. Once at the top, he was able to free the bird and it soared down to the ground where wildlife rescuers captured it.

The MFRD later posted on social media about the incident and praised its rescuers for their effort. “Great job fellas,” they wrote. “We are extremely proud of you and what a call. To be up close to America's symbol of freedom, what a memory!”
