In 2017, Walter Watkins’ three-month-old American Bully, Hennessy, was stolen from the yard of his Memphis, Tennessee, home. Watkins and his son, who was 10-years-old when the pup was taken, searched for her for years before finally giving up. Then last week, six years after Hennessy disappeared, Watkins received a call from Olive Branch Animal Shelter letting him know his dog had been found.

Hennessy had been sold to a family in Olive Branch, Tennessee, four years ago who renamed her Princess. Fortunately, Watkins had microchipped Hennessy as a puppy and kept his contact information updated, allowing the shelter to identify him as the dog's rightful owner.

Watkins is sympathetic to the other family’s position. He’s taken to calling his pup Princess Hennessy and is working with her other family to arrange a situation where they can still see her. He urges others to microchip their pets so they can avoid losing them and be reunited with them more easily. "I believe that with a simple microchip, a lot of people would have their pets back,” he says. “This right here goes to show that it works."
