A Montreal Dog Park Fines Owners for Barking Dogs

A new rule has some dog owners howling. A sign has been put up at a Montreal dog park warning owners they could be fined between $500 and $2,000 for allowing their dogs to bark… at the dog park. While most dog owners are confused and angry, the borough of Saint-Leonard says the sign may be new, but the law has been on the books for a while.

A spokesperson for the Saint-Leonard borough wrote in an email, "This sign was intended to help reduce the nuisance experienced by the neighborhood of this dog park.” The borough said it’s also working on measures to mute the noise including new fences or hedges, but puppy people are still unhappy, arguing that barking is how dogs communicate. One person spoke for many dog parents saying, "It's too much, it's really too much. I know it's to scare people, but it's not fair.”
