Students of Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Arizona, noticed when their beloved government and economics teacher, Clayton Guy, wasn’t being his usual lively self. Known for normally being an energetic teacher, Clayton revealed to the staff and students that his wife, Angel Guy, had been ill and was going to need open-heart surgery.

Understanding the financial burden such a surgery would be on a family living on a teacher’s salary, the students, led by 2023 graduate Parker Bond, started a fundraising campaign. After Clayton reluctantly agreed to accept their help, the students started a crowdfund, quickly raising $10-thousand to help the Guy family out.

Clayton was deeply moved by the support from his current and former students. "I was just honored,” he says, “It kind of made me cry. People were so kind." Angel is now in recovery and despite a long road to being fully recovered, she says she was “overjoyed” by the support, adding that she “couldn’t believe they did it.” As for the students, Bond says that — like many who contributed — it was the first time he’d been able to make such a significant contribution to someone else’s life. And that felt good.
